Howard Jacob, PhD

Professor Jacob received his Ph.D. from University of Iowa in 1989. After joint post-doctoral work with Victor J. Dzau, M.D. and Eric S. Lander, Ph.D., he received a 1992 appointment as Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. Joined the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1996 as an Associate Professor, Department of Physiology with full Professorship in 2001. He was appointed Director of the Human and Molecular Genetics Center and awarded the Warren P. Knowles Chair of Genetics in 1999. In September 2006 Dr. Jacob was asked by Dean Michael Dunn to spearhead and develop the CTSI, along with Dr. Reza Shaker, and serve as Co-Principal Investigator on the CTSA application.

His research interests center on physiological genetics, genetic dissection of and analysis of complex disease, especially target organ damage associated with diabetes mellitus and hypertension. His laboratory is known for applying genomics, and high through-put phenotyping, as well as comparative genomics and bioinformatics. Dr. Jacob chaired the Coordinating Committee for the Program for Genomic Applications (PGA) from September 2001 to September 2004, and still serves as one of the members. This 11 center (37 grants) program builds animal models, genomics tools and reagents, and bioinformatic tools and freely distributes all data and reagents to the public in advance of publication.

In addition to his academic duties, Dr. Jacob is CEO of PhysioGenix, Inc., a biotechnology company he founded in 1997.
