Masters of Science in Clinical and Translational Science
This multifaceted program is designed to provide the education and practical training that are important to planning and conducting clinical and translational research projects in an academic or commercial environment. The program and its curriculum are designed to offer appropriate training to individuals who have established skills and credentials as basic scientists, bioengineers, clinicians, and health care providers (nurses, nutritionists, psychologists, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, etc.). To accommodate the broad set of competencies encompassed in "clinical translational" research and to meet the diverse needs of trainees, we are offering the degree with three concentrations that utilize a set of core courses. The concentrations are:
- Epidemiology/Outcomes Research concentration: This concentration is designed for students whom are clinical fellows and junior faculty, research nurses, health care lawyers, dentists, statisticians, and individuals with undergraduate degrees that wish to pursue a research career. After completing the degree, students have pursued academic careers in clinical research, pursued doctoral degrees in health sciences, or pursued health-related vocations.
- Translational Research concentration: This concentration will provide the requisite competencies for individuals whose research involves application of basic science findings to clinical problems. The concentration emphasizes animal models of disease, genetics of disease, seminars in drug development and translational research resources. Students will include post-doctoral fellows and basic and clinical faculty. In addition, this concentration is designed to meet the needs of individuals who are engaged in drug or device development, particularly in an academic setting. The curriculum is designed to provide individuals with the skills to develop and direct phase 1, 2, or 3 clinical trials. The concentration emphasizes clinical trial designs, ethical issues, and pertinent governmental or institutional regulations.
- Commercial Development concentration: This concentration expands the course offerings of the existing Health Care Technologies Management joint program offered by Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin. It specifically addresses the training needs of individuals who wish to take research discoveries to commercial development. The concentration includes courses related to business, intellectual property, ethics, drug and device development and regulatory issues.
